CyrusOne reached a new recycling milestone in Q3 2023, diverting 44% of all the waste generated from landfills. The company is on track to surpass its corporate sustainability landfill diversion goal to achieve a 50% national recycling rate by year-end.
Last year, CyrusOne ramped up its e-waste recycling through a new partnership with AIT Electronic Recycling Solutions that encourages customers and employees to properly recycle unusable electronics at CyrusOne data centers. Since the program’s inception in May 2022, CyrusOne has diverted more than 100,000 pounds of e-waste from landfills. E-waste recycling keeps valuable and hazardous materials out of the waste stream and makes it easy for customers to manage their own waste.
“Reaching this recycling milestone, as well as achieving excellent results through our e-waste recycling program, demonstrates CyrusOne’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and bettering our environment,” said Dan Moore, Senior Director of Operations Business at CyrusOne. “We’re proud of our recycling achievements thus far, and we’re excited to expand our recycling initiatives in the coming months, including a national pallet recycling program.”
CyrusOne has continually made progress to advance recycling efforts across all its data centers. Earlier this year, CyrusOne launched a zero-waste recycling pilot at its San Antonio campus in partnership with GBCI’s TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) zero-waste certification program. CyrusOne estimates the program will help divert more than 100 tons of waste annually from landfills in San Antonio alone. This includes recycling everything from wooden pallets, servers, and other technology equipment, to cardboard, large wooden cable spools, metal wrapping, boxes, and more.
Recycling is not as easy as one might think. It is expensive and requires careful planning and logistics to find the right services or vendors that can recycle each unique material, such as wood or metal, and haul it away for appropriate processing to ensure materials are broken down in an environmentally responsible way.
CyrusOne’s recycling efforts are done in collaboration with customers, vendors, and service providers, who are encouraged to put all their recyclable waste in the appropriate recycling containers or recycle their waste at their own sites.
To better transition to a circular economy, CyrusOne consistently looks for opportunities to improve waste management and circularity in its operations. In its facilities and throughout the company, many efficient and sustainable waste reduction techniques are employed including paperless systems, general recycling, battery recycling, and assisting customers with electronic waste recycling.
CyrusOne continues to expand zero-waste and recycling efforts across its portfolio. For more information about CyrusOne’s commitment to recycling and sustainability goals, please read the 2023 Sustainability Report.
