The start of a new year brings an opportunity for reflection that helps shape business strategy and priorities for the year ahead. For CyrusOne, 2023 was a year full of advancements and progress. As we move forward into 2024, here’s a look back at some of our milestones from the past year.
Sustainability Efforts
CyrusOne’s sustainability programs made great progress over the past year across our four environmental categories (climate, water, biodiversity, and circularity). We are proud of the strides we have made as a company, and are always striving to do better as reflected in our achievements below:
- Accelerated our ‘climate neutral by 2030’ target and received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term target.
- Added 13 data centers to our National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Certified Habitat portfolio including our Chandler campus (PHX1-8), Northern Virginia (NVA5, NVA6, NVA7, and NVA9), and Cincinnati (CIN5).
- Implemented onsite customer e-waste recycling services at all our U.S. facilities that we operate.
- Added Lewisville (DFW2) as the tenth data center in our net-positive water portfolio as part of our ongoing commitment to improve regions with high water stress, not only reducing consumptive water use but also restoring water to nature.
- Became the first to inform the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact Board that all our fully operational data centers in Europe have been independently audited to comply with the Pact’s terms.
- Powered the Iowa-based Omaha – Council Bluffs (OCB1) data center with 100% renewable electricity.
- Received the BREEAM Very Good green building certification at our London (LON4) data center.
- Reached a new recycling milestone in Q3 2023, diverting 44% of all the waste generated from landfills, and surpassed our corporate sustainability landfill diversion goal to achieve a 50% national recycling rate by year-end.
- Launched a zero-waste recycling pilot at our San Antonio campus in partnership with GBCI’s TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) zero-waste certification program.
- Published our 2023 sustainability report chronicling our hard work to meet far-reaching sustainability goals in addition to keeping pace with customer priorities, technological innovations, and government standards.

customer energy, carbon, and water plus safety metrics.
Global Expansion
In 2023, we expanded into the Asia-Pacific region, broke ground in Frankfurt, celebrated five years in Europe, announced plans for future data centers, and more.
- CyrusOne officially entered the Japanese data center market in 2023, when we announced our joint venture with Kansai Electric Power Company, Inc. (KEPCO). The joint venture, referred to as CyrusOne KEP, brings together two companies with extensive technical and operational expertise to develop data centers in the region that can meet the mission-critical requirements of hyperscale platform companies.
- We broke ground on our fifth data center in Frankfurt (FRA5), strategically located in Hanau, 25 km east of the center of Frankfurt, Europe’s data center capital.
- CyrusOne announced plans to build our sixth and seventh data centers in Frankfurt, named FRA6 and FRA7.
- We marked a key milestone in the development of our brand-new, state-of-the-art data center in Madrid with a traditional flag flying ceremony to celebrate topping out of the facility.
- We celebrated our five-year anniversary since entering Europe.
- We announced the purchase of a 57.6-acre land parcel in Loudoun County, Virginia. Located near the intersection of the Dulles Greenway toll road and Belmont Ridge Road, the site will be the future location of a state-of-the-art data center complex designed for hyperscale cloud providers and large-scale companies.
