CyrusOne, a leading global data center developer and operator specializing in delivering state-of-the-art digital infrastructure solutions, has confirmed plans to build its next data center in Germany, named FRA5,in Hanau, after officially receiving the building permit from the City of Hanau's Mayor Claus Kaminsky.

Situated 25 km east of the data center capital Frankfurt, where the rest of CyrusOne's German portfolio resides, Hanau is a strategically important location for this upcoming build. The campus will consist of two buildings with a total of 18,000 sqm of technical space delivering an IT capacity of 54 megawatts, breathing new life into a historic part of the city once home to a dedicated industrial space.

Following in the footsteps of CyrusOne's existing portfolio in Frankfurt and more broadly across Europe, sustainability and biodiversity will play a central role in the facility. The modern facility will be characterized by energy-efficient operations and measures to ensure sustainability, including operating with a design PUE of 1.27 and being fully powered by renewable electricity. The Energy Management System (EMS) will be ISO50001 compliant. With a closed loop water cooling system and heat being recovered and reused across the campus, important resources are being preserved and utilized. The data center will become BREEAM "Very Good" certified and will align to CyrusOne's corporate ESG objectives and the targets of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact (CNDCP).

The building will feature 2,500 sqm of green walls that are not only aesthetically pleasing but will ensure improved air quality by filtering pollutants, increasing biodiversity by providing habitat for wildlife and reducing noise. This will also support thermoregulation and humidity control and will increase the building's energy efficiency.

Additionally, by working with a local demolition and recycling company in Hanau, CyrusOne has been able to recycle 94% of all demolition material, with all 18 materials including scrap wood, masonry, concrete, glass, asphalt and insulation being sorted on site and delivered to processing plants in Frankfurt and across the country. It is estimated that approximately 33,119 tonnes of materials were recovered for reuse, and approximately 19m 3 of timber beams salvaged to be reused for exterior signage and seating.

"We recognized the digital transformation as an opportunity early on and now, with CyrusOne, we have another strong partner that makes Hanau even more present on the European data center map," Hanau's Mayor Claus Kaminsky is pleased to say. He emphasizes: "We recognized early on that the location of data centers helps us to set up the future of our city with sustainable economic success in order to ensure welfare and prosperity for our citizens in the long term. In doing so ,we act on an equal footing with new partners in the same trusting manner as we have done for years with traditional companies at the Hanau site. In addition, this reuse has made it possible to reorganize the vacated Goodyear industrial site. This enabled the traditional Hanau company to invest in new business areas in the city of the Brothers Grimm and to secure the future of the location.

"The establishment of CyrusOne's facility in Hanau is another milestone in the implementation of our future-oriented economic strategy. Sustainability is incredibly important, and the use of waste heat from data centers plays a central role in this build, with CyrusOne already in dedicated talks on this with our municipal utilities and Hanau Netz GmbH," says Hanau's Economic Development Manager Erika Schulte.

"We are pleased to have found a supportive and visionary partner in the City of Hanau to implement the construction of our fifth data center in the region," said Matt Pullen, Executive Vice President and Managing Director Europe. "We're committed to working with the City of Hanau to build a data center campus that not only supports the economy, but also conserves valuable natural resources and brings opportunities for people in the region."

Construction is expected to commence on site this September, accompanied by a traditional ground-breaking ceremony. The first building will be operational by Q1 2025. With more than 50 high-performance data centers across the globe, CyrusOne offers its customers the opportunity to further drive their own IT growth, whilst staying true to their individuality and scalability goals. The company's European portfolio includes over 270 MW IT capacity across Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Madrid, Paris and Dublin, including all operational data centers and active developments.
