Commitment to Sustainability

CyrusOne implements comprehensive sustainability initiatives that create value for our stakeholders while protecting environmental resources. Our integrated approach addresses four key environmental priorities: Climate, Water, Biodiversity, and Circularity. With European operations already achieving 100% renewable energy, we continue to advance toward our global Climate Neutral by 2030 commitment, validated by the Science-based Targets Initiative (SBTI).

ESG in Action

Sustainability is a key pillar of our business strategy which also includes topics such as engagement with stakeholders, institutional integrity, and ethics. Commitment to these topics drive business success, are important to our stakeholders, and, most importantly, reflect our dedication to doing what’s right.

Climate

As a responsible corporate citizen, CyrusOne recognizes the importance of reducing its carbon footprint to contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change and its associated risks. Consequently, we have taken several actions to address our climate impact from energy use and its associated carbon emissions.

Our main target for Climate Impact is our Climate Neutral by 2030 commitment. Our near-term targets are validated by the Science-based Targets Initiative (SBTI), demonstrating our commitment to make meaningful year-over-year progress on our way to climate neutrality. To reach our goals, we will upgrade the efficiency of our existing facilities, design and build new facilities that are highly efficient, and phase out the use of carbon-intensive energy sources in favor of carbon-free alternatives.

We are a founding member of the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact—an agreement among data center operators, cloud service providers, and industry bodies in Europe to reach climate neutrality by 2030. We achieved this goal for our European operations in 2021, well ahead of schedule. We maintain our climate neutral status in Europe by procuring 100% renewable energy and purchasing carbon offsets for our remaining 1% of carbon which includes diesel backup generators, natural gas, and refrigerant loss.

Water

Traditionally, data centers have utilized cooling systems that evaporate water, removing millions of gallons of water from the watershed and discharging wastewater with highly concentrated contaminants to the local treatment system. But at CyrusOne, we take a different approach. Our data centers are designed to avoid dependence on water for cooling, providing increased resilience and reducing impacts to the communities and habitats where we operate. Combined with our transition to carbon-free energy, our facilities are designed to neither consume large amounts of water nor emit large amounts of carbon.

Our target for water conservation is not to simply do “less bad” but to do “more good” and leave regions better than if we were never there. With this in mind, we developed our net positive water strategy and pioneered the first net positive water data center in 2020. To achieve net positive water status, we first reduce the amount of water that is needed and then partner with environmental nonprofits to restore 20% more water than we withdraw from the local watersheds. This makes our presence in a community a net gain for water. We continue to add facilities to our net positive water portfolio annually and have set a target to make all our facilities that are in high water stress regions into net positive water facilities.

Biodiversity

Our focus on biodiversity, aiming to protect and improve the habitats where we operate and build, is an integral component of our sustainability program. While our data center campuses are mostly occupied by buildings, we find creative opportunities to use the surrounding land to support a diversity of resilient biological networks, mirroring our resilient digital ones.

This commitment extends to protecting vital pollinators like bees through initiatives such as our DUB1 Data Center's native habitat design and our work with industry partners to create pollinator-friendly gardens that simultaneously address food insecurity in our communities.

We approach our biodiversity strategy through the same hierarchy of control that we use to approach other aspects of our environmental portfolio: reduce impact through conscious site selection, restore onsite habitat with water-wise native landscaping, and foster local collaboration to restore offsite habitat.

cyrusone.sustainability.circularity

Circularity

Circularity, also referred to as a transition to a Circular Economy, is a model of production and consumption that involves the reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling of existing materials and products as a means of continuing production in a sustainable or environmentally preferable way. At CyrusOne, our approach to a circular economy is grounded in the fundamental principles of reduce, rethink, reuse, and recycle. These strategies are implemented during both the construction and operation of our data centers.

We recognize that reducing consumption and waste generation at the source is where we can have the biggest impact. Therefore, we focus on construction upstreaming or eliminating the need for a material all together. We then rethink our processes to look for alternative products or materials that either incorporate recycled or renewable content, or have longer lifespans, reducing the frequency that the product needs to be replaced.

Next, we consider ways to reuse material that may otherwise end up in landfill such as integrating fly ash into our concrete mixtures or reusing waste produced during demolition in the construction of a new facility. Where we can’t reduce or reuse, our final line of defense is recycling. We ensure comprehensive recycling practices are in place for most waste materials, encompassing e-waste, construction byproducts, packaging, and more.
