Information Technology

Information Technology is anything that delivers data, information, or knowledge by means of any multimedia sharing device.

With the introduction of the personal computer in the 1980s and its everyday use in the home and the workplace, technology advanced and the world moved into the information age.  Today, businesses’ information technology departments have gone from using storage tapes produced by a single computer operator to unified networks of employee workstations that store information in a server farm, generally somewhere away from the central business site. Communication has progressed, from postal mail, to telephone fax transmissions, to immediate electronic communication through e-mail.

Information Technology provides businesses with four services to aid in implementing the business strategy: business process automation, supplying information, linking up with customers, and efficiency tools.

Information Technology professionals perform and array of functions such as designing complex information databases and computer networks.  Some of the tasks that information technology professionals perform may include networking, software design, data management, engineering, and system administration.  Information technology has become increasingly utilized in our society with technologies such as smart phones, automobiles, audio devices, etc.
