A Data Backup Service is a solution offered by a company to restore original data that has been lost after a data loss event.
Data backup services have two distinct purposes. The primary purpose is to recover data after it’s been lost by either data deletion or corruption. Data loss is a very common problem among computer users. The secondary purpose of a data backup service is to recover data from a prior time. A backup application is typically used to determine how long copies of data are required to be kept for.
Though data backup services generally represent a kind of disaster recovery, and should separately be part of a disaster recovery plan, they should not alone be considered disaster recovery. Not all backup systems or backup applications are able to restore a computer system, or even other complex configuration such as a computer cluster, active directory servers, or a database server, by restoring only data from a backup.
