Land purchase signals continued expansion of Houston geophysical center of excellence.
Dallas, TX (April 23, 2013) –Global data center services provider CyrusOne (NASDAQ: CONE) announced today the purchase of an adjacent 32-acre parcel of land at its Houston West campus, which increases the size of the campus to more than 45 acres. With this land acquisition, CyrusOne expands the largest multi-tenant digital energy campus for the oil and gas industry in the United States.
“Over the past decade, CyrusOne has created a geophysical center of excellence for seismic exploration computing at its Houston West data center,” said Gary Wojtaszek, president and CEO of CyrusOne. “Purchasing adjacent property presents an exciting opportunity for us to continue expanding and providing more of the innovative products and services that our customers are demanding from us.”
Oil and Gas Industry Expertise
The continued expansion of its Houston data center is part of CyrusOne’s global data center strategy, which includes having a leading market position in the oil and gas industry—and ultimately doing business with nearly all super-major and major oil and gas firms in the world. The company believes its Houston West campus will attract significant research and development investment to the Houston area as more companies and countries look to expand their exploration expertise particularly in the newer hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” procedures.
During the last decade, CyrusOne has developed unique data center engineering capabilities to handle the highest density computing environments in the industry. These high-performance data centers give customers the flexibility to leverage the most advanced server technology, accommodating up to 1,000 watts per square foot and higher, which in turn has enabled CyrusOne to become the leading technology provider for seismic exploration research and development.
CyrusOne’s Houston West campus also houses the first-ever enterprise high-performance computing (HPC) cloud solution for the oil and gas industry. The solution enables companies to align performance computing directly to project periods and refresh cycles—optimizing budgets, time commitments, and technology for oil and gas customers managing seismic processing demands.
“We continue to expand the ecosystem for facilitating research and development of geophysical exploration data,” explained Wojtaszek. “As part of this expansion plan, CyrusOne plans to partner with some of the largest universities in our footprint to help accelerate and improve the analytical processes associated with the world’s exploration activities by combining the top academic research institutions with the leading oil and gas companies.”
Best-in-Class Facilities and Interconnectivity
Earlier this year, CyrusOne launched in Texas the first statewide Internet Exchange (IX) in the United States, connecting all major sites in Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. The CyrusOne Texas IX enables customers to connect to their own enterprise-owned facilities, and to third-party facilities, within a metro area and city-to-city to seamlessly engage the full ecosystem of business partners, content providers, networks, carriers, Internet service providers, and Ethernet buyers and sellers. Many of CyrusOne’s oil and gas customers have been attracted to the IX platform, as it provides for a secure and cost-effective way for companies to share the tremendous amount of data associated with the seismic exploration efforts that are being stored, analyzed, and shared in CyrusOne facilities.
