Dallas, TX – April 1, 2009 – CyrusOne, a corporate colocation provider, announced today that it has signed a long term lease agreement to acquire real estate to build a data center in Austin, Texas, making the company the leading provider in the Texas colocation market. The company will have six facilities totaling 380,000 square feet in Texas, including two facilities in Houston, three in Dallas and one in Austin.
The 50,000 square-foot facility is located in Austin’s premier data center business park, The MetCenter, which encompasses two on-site electric substations each with the capacity to reach 400 megawatts fed from separate power sources, an underground electrical infrastructure and redundant telecom and water infrastructure.
With the opening of the Austin data center, CyrusOne brings two “anchor” clients, one company in the Global Top 10 and the other in the Fortune 500; both in the energy industry. These initial clients will allow CyrusOne to enter the market with positive operating income.
Unlike any provider in Austin, CyrusOne will provide its typical high power densities, fully redundant colocation services that are engineered in a 2N configuration for power and cooling. Disaster recovery and business continuity services in the Austin site will be available immediately for customers, while data center space will come online in the third quarter of this year. The data center will be fully engineered and constructed with today’s best-in-class design, by the CyrusOne construction team with the same features present in the other CyrusOne facilities.
“Colocation is seeing increased popularity as more enterprises face difficulties in making capital data center investments,” said Dan Golding, vice president and research director for Tier 1 Research. “The Dallas market, in particular, is extremely popular among colocation customers. High-quality, carrier-neutral Dallas data center space is moving quickly in a market that will see strong growth over the next four years.”
Also driving demand in the Dallas area is the city’s central location and heavy fiber networks. The region also has few power problems.
“We have always been drawn to Austin because of the city’s vibrant culture and expanding technology industry, as well as its proximity to Houston and Dallas,” said David Ferdman, President and Chief Executive Officer, CyrusOne. “Now that we’ve created a strong and differentiated data center colocation platform that has great momentum in the Dallas and Houston markets, we are ready to finally bring a best-in-class data center option to the Austin marketplace.”
Austin is an attractive market for national and international enterprise colocation due to its low cost of stable power, an abundance of highly skilled technical labor, minimal risk for natural disasters, and predictable weather conditions. The addition of CyrusOne’s Austin data center facility complements its existing Houston and Dallas colocation offerings for existing and new customers.
“We are excited about CyrusOne’s decision to invest in Austin by locating its next data center in Central Texas,” said Gary Farmer, Chair, Opportunity Austin, and President, Heritage Title Company. “The addition of CyrusOne’s uniquely designed facility is a great fit for Opportunity Austin’s strategy to develop a high tech environment for existing local business as well as those entering the Austin market.”
CyrusOne offers the highest density data centers in the Southwestern United States, currently supporting server installations that utilize up to 1,000 watts of power per square foot, versus traditional 120 watts per square foot, offered by competitors. This high density enables customers to confidently implement more sophisticated applications and handle larger volumes of mission-critical information, a trend that will grow even more important in the years to come.
The CyrusOne data centers represent the largest high-density, fully redundant collocation facilities in the Southwestern United States. The facilities are designed for zero downtime. They accommodate the latest server technologies in a fully redundant, 2N power and cooling configuration. CyrusOne engineers all data centers with multiple levels of uninterruptible power supplies and diesel generators.
