CyrusOne Chandler Carrier DayAs construction moves forward with the CyrusOne Chandler facility, the time was right to show essential telecom carriers what we’re doing.  Our “Carrier Day” event brought potential carriers together for a presentation on CyrusOne, the facility and to describe the infrastructure we’ve pre-positioned for them.  We also conducted a site visit. With so many carriers present at one time, we were able to gather a lot of input about the new data center.

The “Carrier Day” event is a new concept for CyrusOne.  As the only provider in the industry soliciting carrier input in this manner, we’re able to collect important information to help fine-tune our solutions.  CyrusOne will conduct these events as the company expands globally.  This unique step in the construction process supports our carrier customers and acknowledges the special value they provide in developing our data center solutions.

Telecom carriers (the ones who actually have their own fiber backbones) realize a very large upfront cost if their fiber is not located nearby. They also face barriers such as highways that require large scale directional bores or railroad crossings that need special permits and caissons to protect the rail line and their fibers. Luckily the CyrusOne Chandler data center is perfectly located.  The facility is adjacent to multiple fiber providers without any highway or rail crossings nearby.

The carriers attending the event discussed the benefits of co-building in trenches and bores to save money and rapidly build into the site. In addition, the carriers huddled together to discuss their mutual goals.

During the meeting, we also polled the attendees for special requests regarding space needs including DC power (something not traditionally offered by CyrusOne), and fiber or copper deployment requests. Based on our polling results, we determined many of the carriers actually want larger cages on the main colocation floor.

Several other discussions involved reselling CyrusOne space to the carriers’ own customers.  The attendees were excited about our dedicated carrier areas and neutral, secure meet-me rooms for interconnection with their customers and partners.

Carriers committing to build into our new site for day-one operations include: Level3, COX, CenturyLink, XO, Integra, SRP and Zayo/AboveNet (these last three carriers all offer dark fiber).  Carriers who are nearby and can easily deploy at the site are: AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.

A special thanks to Cheryl Gibson for organizing the meeting, as well as Ed Martin, Bill Williams, Stuart Levinsky, Scott Brueggeman, Larry Tucker and Brandon McDaniel for their support and participation.
