CyrusOne celebrates World Environment Day
June 5 marks the United Nations Environmental Program’s 49th annual World Environmental Day, which “calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet.”
It’s a herald of change CyrusOne works to answer every day, helping to set a sustainability standard for the data center industry.
“Climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste – evidence that Earth is ‘code red’ is all around us and growing more ominous every day,” the United Nations Environmental Program notes. “The way out of this dilemma is to transform our economies and societies to make them inclusive, fair and more connected with nature. We must shift from harming the planet to healing it.”
It’s our generation’s call to duty and particularly meaningful for our industry, which accounts for 2% of the total U.S. energy use every year, not to mention gobbling up 3 million to 5 million gallons of water at every data center every day.
CyrusOne is proud to be an industry outlier, deploying the latest technologies, strategies and designs to have a much lighter impact on the earth’s precious resources and lead the way for data centers. We recently disclosed our environmental impact through Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and became the first data center real estate investment trust to disclose CDP’s newer Water Security questionnaire, underscoring the importance of water in the data center industry.
We have made tremendous strides in our sustainability program and working with the CDP is an important milestone. You can read more about our CDP disclosure here.
Our commitment to transparency about our sustainability mission is further evidenced in our third annual sustainability report, which is compatible with four third-party standards: Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Standards, The Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures, the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and Sustainable Development Goals Alignment.
The exhaustive report covers all our achievements, including meeting the Climate Neutral Data Center Pact ahead of time, our expansion of renewable energy procurement, our net positive water commitment, our goal of becoming 100% carbon neutral by 2040 and our efforts to push the boundaries of water disclosure. You can read about that and so much more in the full report here.
We have learned managing climate, energy usage and water risk is a journey, not a destination. So every day, we place sustainability at the center of what we do to connect the world. We are building a resilient company for a more sustainable future, and we know we have more work ahead. And this World Environment Day, we salute all the organizations, companies and people who strive every day to create a better world for future generations – to heal and not harm.
