America Recycles Day: AIT e-waste recycling partnership already generating big dividends

November 15, 2022

At CyrusOne, our sustainability mission often finds us focused on reducing our energy and water consumption, buying renewables, and monitoring and cutting carbon emissions. But we never lose sight on another important sustainable practice – recycling.

In May, CyrusOne partnered with AIT Electronic Recycling Solutions to administer a company-wide, no-cost comprehensive electronic recycling and data destruction program. To mark America Recycles Day on Nov. 15, we are pleased to announce AIT has picked up over 33,000 lbs. of recyclable materials.

As part of the partnership with AIT, we installed collection bins in all CyrusOne facilities to recycle continually and properly end-of-life electronic equipment. The clean-up initiative encourages customers to begin the process of properly recycling unusable electronics at our data center facilities. We encourage all our customers to use these e-waste bins whenever the need arises.

This new electronic waste recycling program is a vital part of CyrusOne’s efforts to reduce e-waste by reusing valuable materials and keeping toxins out of the environment.

Items that can be recycled include cabling (coax, copper and fiber), server hardware and rack rails. Hard drives can also be recycled, but customers should follow their company data destruction policies prior to placing in the recycle box. Once the hardware is placed in the box and recycled, CyrusOne has no way of providing documentation specific to their hardware.

If a customer needs a certificate of destruction to recycle their hardware, the customer can contact AIT directly to coordinate a direct pickup and receive their certificate.

Additionally, we accept e-waste items from home. Our recycling bins can be used to recycle old printers, monitors, keyboards and computer towers. The only items we do not accept for recycling are TVs, lightbulbs and white goods, such as refrigerators, microwaves or kitchen appliances.

To find bins in any of our facilities, customers need only ask any member of the CyrusOne site team, such as security, operations or service delivery.
